49ers Inspire Change Mentorship Cooking Class

The San Francisco 49ers gave us the opportunity of a lifetime! Our students were invited to learn and discuss what healthy food choices can look like and how nutrition affects our bodies. They were surprised by having the players from the team join us in the official press room to hear a discussion lead by Jordan Mazur Director of Nutrition, and Alohi Lilly Assistant of Nutrition.

Our students were then led to the 49ers Cafe to get a hands-on experience with creating healthy snacks like peanut butter banana wraps, energy bites, overnight oats, chia seed pudding and veggies & ranch. The students had sooooo much fun making the healthy snacks with the players as they poured, mixed, spread and tried out their new recipes. The team then gifted each youth with a basket full of ingredients including organic honey, vanilla extract, along with measuring cups, spoons and apron.

Our students were then introduced to the chefs and staff who help to feed and fuel the players. The youth were able to select their own dinner from options like salmon, chicken, smashed potatoes, sautéed carrots and so much more and then were able to sit with the players and eat. It was such a treat! The 49ers players were amazing! They were incredibly engaged and receptive to our students which is such a powerful example of community and their wonderful dedication to inspiring our students.

The 49ers staff taught our students not only how to make healthy snacks but then also gave them the tools and ingredients to do it at home- impacting and influencing their whole family to think more consciously about their food choices. Teaching them about nutrition and having them get some hands-on experience with making healthy snacks helped our students to learn new ways to think about food. And an added bonus was that our youth also made new friendships with each other.
