Great.com Talks With… Alive & Free

Almost one percent of the American population is behind bars. But there is a solution that could thin prison populations not only in America but throughout the world. In this episode we talked with Dr. Joseph Marshall Jr. from Alive & Free about bringing an end to violence among young people.

Treating Violence Like Heart Disease

Originally called the Omega Boys Club, Alive & Free sees its name as its mantra. It envisions a world without incarceration, and practices a prescriptive method for stopping violence in its tracks. Dr. Joseph Marshall Jr. believes violence can be pathologized and treated like any other disease. He explains that what makes violence so insidious is that it masquerades as a survival tool. In reality, violence leads to death, not survival. It is important to help young people realise that by turning away from violence, they can lead free and happy lives.
