Street Soldiers Radio: Celebrating 40 Years of East Palo Alto
Street Soldiers Radio celebrated the 40th anniversary of East Palo Alto, CA. It was on July 1,1983 that EPA became incorporated. I’ll bet you didn’t know that this 2.5 square mile city currently has 9 players in the NFL. Remarkable! Current All Pro wide receiver Devante Adams is one of them. We were joined by mom Sadio Simon and her two NFL player sons to talk about being raised there. Then residents and community leaders joined to talk about the rich heritage of the city and how the tight knit community has moved on from the crack cocaine crisis of the 1980’s and 90’s. Big thanks to all of our guests: Sadio Simon, Nashon Wright, Rejzohn, Wright, Deandre Forks, Eric Washington, Larry Moody, Doug Fort and Demetra Jones. Happy Anniversary EPA!
“I got to see a glimpse of EPA prior to the 90’s and the late 80s. It was just like you closed your door one night and opened it in and it was like night and day. I grew up in a predominantly black community and businesses were owned by black folks. I can clearly recall going to our local corner store and if I even attempted to act a fool, ‘I’m going to tell your uncle’ and that straightened me out real quick,” shares Ms. Demetra Jones as she reminisces on growing up in East Palo Alto.
